'The United Nations food agency, the World Food Programme (WFP), won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for its efforts to combat hunger and improve conditions for peace in areas affected by conflict. The Nobel Committee stated that the problem of hunger has again become more acute in recent years, not least because the coronavirus pandemic has added to the hardship already faced by millions. The Rome-based organization says it helps almost 100 million people in about 88 countries each year, and that one in nine people worldwide still do not have enough to eat. The organization also runs a logistics service that has dispatched medical cargoes to over 120 countries throughout the pandemic to help governments and health partners fighting COVID-19. WFP\'s Executive Director David Beasley said that awarding the U.N. food agency the Nobel Peace Prize was a call to end wars and conflicts, which would combat world hunger. It was the ninth award for the U.N. or one of its agencies.
