'Fall Food Plot Planting 2017 walks through the steps for how to plant brassicas. I think this is the best fall food plot mix to use when planting food plots for deer. The brassica mix I use in this brassica food plot planting is a combination of forage radishes, purple top turnips, and dwarf essex rape. I used the following seed rates: Forage Radishes: 5 lbs / acre Purple Top Turnips: 3 lbs / acre Dwarf Essex Rape: 2 lbs / acre A few key points for how to plant food plots are to control weeds, prepare the seed bed, prepare the soil, and seed at the proper rate. My videos in this series for 2017 show each of these steps. I also describe my method for preparing the soil which includes spreading lime and fertilizer prior to planting. Fertilizer and lime rates used are: Pelletized lime: 400 lbs /acre Triple 19 Fertilizer (19%N, 19%P, 19%K): 200 lbs / acre Urea Fertilizer (46% N): 150 lbs / acre. 3 Seeding Tips: 1) Measure Seed per acre (if you don\'t have scale 1 cup of seed is about 0.3 lbs) 2) Set spreader to lowest setting (better to have to go over a 2nd time than seeding too heavy) 3) Place guides to spread in rows (helps keep from seeding too heavy and/or having bare spots)'
