'This week on Whitetail Woods 365 I\'m joined by my wife, Kaylee, while we put in several acres of brassica food plots for our whitetail deer herd in southern Wisconsin. Follow along step by step in this how to video. == Check your local planting zone recommendations for when to plant. For us, late July to early August is the best time. If you can time out your planting with a good rainfall, even better! Seed Choice :: Cabela\'s Brassica Mix with Micro Boost Seed Rate :: 8 lb/acre if Drilled, 15 lb/acre if Broadcast == Steps: 1. Select your seed - this may be based on your soil type, plot location, equipment available, or specific requirements for your herd. 2. Prepare the soil - our soil tests were completed earlier this year, but if you don\'t have a good understanding of your soil quality, start there. We prepared our soil by using a disc implement on a tractor, but you can use a rototiller, rake, cultivator, or anything you have to break up the soil. 3. Fertilize - lay down a general fertilizer to start. Later in the growth season, we will come back to give these plots the Nitrogen they crave. Putting down fertilizer at the time of planting will help ensure a high quality food plot from Day 1. 4. Cultipack - firm up the soil with whatever means you have. Even driving back and forth with a truck or ATV can get the job done in a pinch. We are using the cultipacker to press in the fertilizer as well as create a firm seedbed to help get a better crop. 5. Spread the seed - a hand broadcaster is best. We use Earthway, but you can use a number of different brands. Expect to pay close to $100 for a high quality spreader, but you can get one at your local home supply store that will do the job for about $30. 6. Cultipack again - brassica seeds only need to be covered about 1/4\". Covering them too much will actually harm the growth of the plant. Run over the plot a few times with your soil compacter tool that you used in the first round. Then, pray for rain! == Leave questions and comments below. == Facebook: www.facebook.com/whitetailwoods365 Instagram: Mark_Frazier'
