'From fillers to ‘boob’ jobs the cosmetic surgery industry is booming. Tonight we will get under the skin of plastic surgery and take a look at the world of cosmetic procedures.  Once an industry associated with people wanting to turn back the clock it now seems that more of the younger generation is opting to go under the knife. Non -surgical treatments have helped make cosmetic procedures so accessible that it’s considered quite normal to have “work done” regardless of age. Some procedures are so simple that it’s as easy and as quick as popping into the hairdresser for highlights. Arguably, cosmetic procedures are no longer about vanity its just another way of looking good. We will look at the latest trends from the ‘cute eye ‘fad that’s become popular in Singapore to the disturbing new trend for “vaginal tightening” and “labia correcting” inspired by pornography. We will also look at the moral issues and whether cosmetic surgery exacerbates misguided conceptions of normality and the pressure on young people to change their appearance.  Indeed, has the body become like a garment to be altered and embellished according to the dictates of fashion?  We will examine people’s obsession to have the perfect body. Does the pursuit of a perfect ideal contribute to repeated and inappropriate use of cosmetic surgery?  How common is body dysmorphic disorder? And what about the industry in Singapore?  How regulated is it? How competitive is it?  It’s a lucrative business and anyone with a medical degree in Asia can legally do cosmetic procedures – doctors, dermatologists, dentists and even gynecologists.  We will also look at the rise of Korea and ask if the competition is challenging Singapore’s reputation as one of the leading destinations for cosmetic surgery.  To help answer some of these questions we have a line up of some of Singapore’s most eminent cosmetic specialists.
